About Capsules

A capsule is a sealed container that drops a single random sticker when opened.

Unlike weapon cases, capsules do not require a separate key — once a capsule is in your inventory you open it directly, and the cost is whatever you paid for the capsule itself. That structure makes capsules the main supply source for almost every sticker in CS2, from cheap themed art sets to the signature and team stickers tied to Majors.

The cheapest is Paris 2023 Contenders Sticker Capsule at $0.05; the dearest, Boston 2018 Minor Challengers Autograph Capsule at $200.00.

What a capsule is and how it differs from a case

A capsule yields exactly one sticker per open, selected at random from the items listed on that capsule's collection. The key practical difference from weapon cases is that capsules are key-free: there is no paywalled key, so the only spend is buying the capsule on the Steam Community Market or receiving it as a drop. Because the outcome is a single sticker rather than a skin plus a rare-special knife pool, the expected value math is simpler — you are betting the capsule price against the spread of sticker prices inside it. Stickers themselves are then applied to weapons (where they can be scraped or, in CS2, peeled and degraded by wear) or held and traded. Capsules are also the container type for some non-sticker cosmetics: patch packs hold agent patches, pin capsules hold collectible pins, and the newer charm/keychain capsules hold weapon charms, but the classic and most traded capsules are sticker capsules.

Capsule families: sticker, team, and autograph

Standalone sticker capsules (community-art and operation sets) contain only printed-art stickers across the standard rarity tiers and are the cheapest, highest-supply category. Major capsules split into two kinds. Team capsules carry the logos of the orgs that attended a given Major; each logo typically exists in tiers such as standard, foil, holo and gold. Autograph capsules (sold per group, e.g. Legends, Challengers, Contenders) carry individual player signatures, and the same signature exists in escalating variants — Paper, Glitter, Holo and Gold — with Paper the common pull and Gold the rare chase. Opening a Major autograph capsule gives one signature in one of those finishes, which is why two capsules of the same name can produce wildly different value.

Sticker rarity tiers inside capsules

Stickers use their own rarity ladder, shown by color: High Grade (blue), Remarkable (purple), Exotic (pink) and Extraordinary (red), with Major holo/foil/gold finishes sitting at the top end. A community sticker capsule will spread its contents across these tiers, so most opens return common blues while the foils and holos are the scarce returns that carry the capsule's expected value. For Major lines, the holo and gold finishes of popular teams and players are the items that define resale prices. When evaluating a capsule, the relevant question is not just the average sticker but the price of the top one or two foils/holos relative to the capsule's market price.

How to obtain and open capsules

Active capsules are sold on the Steam Community Market and, during live Major broadcasts, are purchasable in-client; Major capsule sales historically route a share of revenue to the participating teams and players. Older capsules circulate only on the secondhand market once Valve stops issuing them. To open, right-click the capsule in your inventory and confirm — no key, no extra charge. Sealed capsules can be worth more than the expected value of their contents, particularly retired Major capsules, so for collectible lines holding the unopened capsule is often the better play than opening it.

Demand pockets: what's expensive and what's cheap

The most valuable capsules are retired Major lines that were never reissued. The 2014 EMS Katowice capsules are the canonical example: their holo and foil stickers (the iBUYPOWER Holo, Titan Holo, Reason Gaming and similar) are among the most expensive stickers in the game, which drags the sealed capsules to extreme prices. Other retired Majors (Cologne 2014, Cluj-Napoca 2015, MLG Columbus 2016) command strong premiums for the same supply-frozen reason. At the other end, community sticker capsules and recent operation capsules are inexpensive and high-supply, making them the cheap way to source decorative stickers. Mid-tier interest concentrates on holo signatures of star players and iconic team logos from well-known Majors.

Frequently asked questions

Do CS2 capsules need a key to open?

No. Unlike weapon cases, sticker, team and autograph capsules open directly from your inventory with no separate key. The only cost is buying the capsule itself.

What do you get from a capsule?

One random sticker per open, drawn from the items on that capsule's collection. Major autograph capsules give a single player signature in one finish (Paper, Glitter, Holo or Gold); team capsules give one logo, often in standard, foil, holo or gold.

Why are Katowice 2014 capsules so expensive?

They were issued only briefly in 2014 and never reissued, so supply is frozen while demand for their holo and foil stickers keeps climbing. That scarcity makes both the stickers and the sealed capsules some of the priciest items in CS2.

What's the difference between a capsule and a case?

A case needs a paid key and drops a weapon skin (with a small chance at a knife or gloves). A capsule needs no key and drops a single sticker. Capsules are the main supply source for stickers.

What are the autograph sticker variants?

Player signatures from Major autograph capsules exist as Paper (common), Glitter, Holo and Gold (rarest). The same player's Gold can be worth many times their Paper version.

Should I open or hold a capsule?

For active, high-supply community capsules, opening is fine. For retired Major lines, sealed capsules often trade above the expected value of their contents, so holding the unopened capsule is usually the better option.
