About M4A4 Skins
The M4A4 is one of two rifles in the Counter-Terrorist primary slot, sharing that slot with the M4A1-S — you carry one or the other, never both.
It fires full-auto from a 30-round magazine with no suppressor, giving it more bullets per mag and a larger reserve than the silenced M4A1-S, at the cost of a louder report and a brighter muzzle flash. In CS2 it buys for $3,100, and it remains the default pick for players who want spray volume and don't mind giving away their position on the sound.
The cheapest is M4A4 (Steel Work) at $0.01; the dearest, M4A4 (Howl) at $6,300.
Role, ammo and M4A4 vs M4A1-S
The M4A4 occupies the CT rifle slot alongside the M4A1-S, and a loadout can only hold one of the two. The M4A4 trades the M4A1-S's suppressor and tighter recoil for a 30-round magazine (versus 20), a larger ammo reserve, and a slightly higher rate of fire, making it the choice for holding bombsites where you may need to spray multiple angles without reloading. The downside is sound and visibility: shots are unsuppressed and the tracer/flash give away position. At $3,100 it is $200 more than the M4A1-S. Because both guns are functionally interchangeable in the slot, many players' choice between them comes down to feel and to which gun they own a skin for — which keeps demand strong on both sides.
The Howl and Contraband rarity
The M4A4 Howl was released as a Covert finish in the Huntsman Weapon Case in 2014. Its artwork was later found to infringe on another artist's work, so Valve removed the image from the workshop, redrew the design, and reclassified every copy already in circulation under a brand-new rarity tier — Contraband (deep red, above Covert). No new Howls can ever drop or be unboxed, so the existing supply is fixed and shrinks slowly through trade-locks and lost accounts. That fixed supply, combined with the unique rarity badge, is why the Howl is the single most sought-after and expensive M4A4 finish, with low-float and StatTrak examples commanding the steepest premiums. Holographic and team stickers from the era add further value on top.
Iconic Covert finishes: Asiimov, Neo-Noir and more
After the Howl, the M4A4 Asiimov (Phoenix collection) is the flagship — the orange-white-black sci-fi pattern that became one of the most recognizable skins in CS history. The M4A4 Neo-Noir (Clutch Case) features a stylized femme-fatale comic art and is a perennial favorite. Other notable Coverts and Classifieds include The Emperor, Desolate Space, Hellfire, Royal Paladin, Buzz Kill, Poseidon, Daybreak, Dragon King, Temukau and Spider Lily. These finishes drive the bulk of trade volume; their value tracks float (visual wear), StatTrak availability, and whether a clean four-digit float lands in a given exterior tier.
Wear ranges, floats and StatTrak
M4A4 finishes span the full wear scale, but several have capped float ranges that change which exteriors exist. The Asiimov family, for example, has a minimum float around 0.18, so no Factory New copies exist — the cleanest you can buy is Field-Tested, and Well-Worn/Battle-Scarred copies show heavy scratching on the white panels. Pattern-style finishes like Asiimov and Neo-Noir wear visibly on the lighter areas, so float matters a lot to appearance even within the same exterior label. Most modern case Coverts ship with StatTrak counterparts, which add a kill counter and a price premium; older finishes from collections without StatTrak (e.g. some Souvenir-only or early-collection skins) may exist only in the normal variant.
Price tiers and the cheapest way in
M4A4 prices fan out across a wide range. At the top sits the Contraband Howl, then Covert finishes like Asiimov and Neo-Noir, a solid Classified/Restricted mid-tier, and a long tail of cheap Mil-Spec and Industrial skins. The cheapest painted M4A4s come from low-rarity case and collection drops — finishes like Tornado, Magnesium, Faded Zebra, Evil Daimyo and Mainframe regularly sell for cents in worn exteriors, making them the budget route to a non-default rifle. For a recognizable look without Covert money, mid-tier picks such as Howl-adjacent reds, X-Ray or In Living Color offer strong visual impact at a fraction of the flagship price.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the M4A4 Howl so expensive?
The Howl is the only Contraband-rarity weapon in CS2. Its original artwork was removed for copyright infringement, so no new copies can ever drop or be unboxed. The supply is permanently fixed and slowly shrinking, which — combined with the unique rarity tier — pushes its price far above any other M4A4 finish. StatTrak and low-float examples cost the most.
M4A4 or M4A1-S — which is better?
They share the CT rifle slot, so you can only carry one. The M4A4 has a 30-round magazine, larger reserve and a slightly faster fire rate, but it's unsuppressed (louder, brighter flash). The M4A1-S is quieter with tighter recoil but only 20 rounds. Pick the M4A4 for spray volume on site holds; pick the M4A1-S for stealth and recoil control.
Can the M4A4 Asiimov be Factory New?
No. The Asiimov design has a minimum float around 0.18, so no Factory New or Minimal Wear copies exist. The cleanest available exterior is Field-Tested. Higher-wear copies show heavy scratching on the white sections, so float matters a lot for appearance.
What is the cheapest M4A4 skin?
The cheapest M4A4 finishes are low-rarity Mil-Spec and Industrial drops such as Tornado, Magnesium, Faded Zebra and Evil Daimyo. In worn exteriors these regularly sell for cents, making them the budget way to run a non-default M4A4.
Does the M4A4 have StatTrak skins?
Yes. Most M4A4 finishes from cases ship with StatTrak counterparts that track confirmed kills and carry a price premium. Some older collection or Souvenir-only finishes exist only as normal (non-StatTrak) versions.
Is the M4A4 Howl still obtainable?
No. After the artwork was removed, all existing Howls were converted to Contraband rarity and the skin was pulled from the drop pool. It can no longer be unboxed or dropped — the only way to get one is to buy an existing copy on the market.
